Festival Messiaen au pays de la Meije

Presentation

The Pays de la Meije Messiaen Festival started life in 1998 with four concerts; it has blossomed to become a major event in contemporary music. Every summer in July its program combines bold 20th century masterpieces with contemporary creations at over 15 concerts over 9, music filled, days.

The brilliant performances of experienced musicians or up and coming artists are echoed in the remarkable site that hosts the Festival: La Grave, an alpine village of 500 inhabitants perched at an altitude of 1500 m, facing the spectacular massif of La Meije. This is where Olivier Messiaen drew his inspiration to compose some of his greatest works, a truly exceptional natural environment, almost overwhelming in its majesty. "The powerful and solemn scenery of La Grave, facing the glaciers of La Meije is my true homeland," he said ...

This event is not only a tribute to the master and his disciples but is also dedicated to looking towards the future of music. Each edition is the opportunity to discover exciting world premieres and bright new talent through fruitful collaborations with leading contemporary composers, IRCAM (Institute for Research and Coordination Acoustic / Music), Conservatoire National Supérieur of Music and Dance in Paris and the Conservatoire National Supérieur of Music and Dance in Lyon.

From a precious past legacy to an audacious future, transmission of musical knowledge is at the heart of the festival: concerts, conferences, residencies for young musicians, enriching hikes, workshops ... The Pays de la Meije Messiaen Festival sustenance for your ears, eyes and your mind!
